Behind the Scenes

“Can you do more jumping jacks?”

- “Weird Al” Yankovic, Jumping Jacks with “Weird Al” Yankovic

What started as a running joke during a trip to Las Vegas became one of the stranger little Dollars & Donuts side stories. During the trip, Daryl Della, Ray Revello, and Tyler Della kept tormenting Lorenzo Ocon with an impromptu “Exercise Now!” campaign, demanding jumping jacks from him in increasingly ridiculous places. The joke escalated as other people got pulled into it, including cocktail waitresses and, eventually, “Weird Al” Yankovic.

After a concert at Planet Hollywood, Daryl and Tyler asked Al to record a short video for Lorenzo asking one simple question: “Can you do more jumping jacks?” and that was all that was needed for a full meltdown from Lorenzo.

The film builds an entire Looney Tunes-style punishment around that very clip, with Al’s request returning again and again while Lorenzo is pushed into increasingly desperate compliance. The joke works because Lozo plays it so straight. What could have stayed a disposable vacation prank became something much more elaborate through editing, repetition, and Lorenzo’s willingness to keep taking the abuse. Whether “Weird Al” has seen it or not remains a mystery.

The jumping-jacks saga did not end there. Years later, it resurfaced in The Sadder but Wiser Boy, which borrowed heavily from Daryl and Lorenzo’s real-world friendship for the relationship between Dallas and Lando. The old Vegas joke was folded directly into that dynamic, with Lando spending much of the film being ordered to do jumping jacks all over again. What began as a stupid bit between friends had officially become continuity.
